China has committed to reducing tariffs on Canadian canola oil, bringing the levy down from a staggering 85% to a more manageable 15% by March 1st. In return, Ottawa has agreed to tax Chinese electric vehicles at a favorable rate of 6.1%, a move that could open new doors for Chinese investments in Canada.

A Frosty History, A New Beginning
The last Canadian Prime Minister to visit China was Justin Trudeau in 2017, before the relationship took a turn for the worse in 2018. The arrest of Meng Wanzhou, the CFO of Chinese tech giant Huawei, at the request of the US, led to a series of events that strained the relationship further. China detained Canadian citizens Michael Kovrig and Michael Spavor on espionage charges, a move widely seen as retaliation. All three were eventually released in 2021.
In the lead-up to the Carney-Xi meeting, Michael Kovrig emphasized the importance of managing leverage in negotiations with China. He described Chinese negotiators as skilled and strategic, always seeking an advantage. Carney seems to have taken this advice to heart, adopting a disciplined approach in his engagement with China.
