In the face of an impending snowstorm, residents of several towns on Long Island can breathe a sigh of relief because they won’t have to worry about taking out the trash this Monday. The severe weather has prompted officials in at least eight towns and two cities to pause garbage and recycling collection services for the day.
The affected towns include Hempstead, Huntington, North Hempstead, Babylon, Brookhaven, Riverhead, Oyster Bay, and Islip, all of which have announced that trash pickups will be postponed until later in the week. Additionally, the cities of Glen Cove and Long Beach have also canceled their scheduled trash collections for Monday, as noted on their official websites.
Umberto Mignardi, a spokesperson for North Hempstead, emphasized the town's focus on road safety during this storm. "Our priority is currently on plowing and salting the roads to ensure safe travel for everyone," he stated. He assured residents that crews are working diligently through the night and into the next day, with normal trash collection expected to resume on Tuesday, assuming the storm dissipates as anticipated.
For residents in Hempstead who normally have their trash picked up on Tuesdays, they can expect collection to occur on Wednesday instead, per the town's website. Conversely, the Town of Huntington confirmed that their regular pickups on Tuesdays and Fridays will proceed as planned.
Babylon officials took to their website to advise residents against placing their garbage outside on Monday, warning that containers could become buried under the heavy snowfall predicted for the day. Meanwhile, Brookhaven has rescheduled its Monday collection to Thursday but cautioned that pickups may run later than usual due to the potential backlog from double collections.
In Islip, Monday's trash collection has also been moved to Thursday. Riverhead, on the other hand, simply announced the cancellation of trash pickup for Monday without providing a resumption date.
In Oyster Bay, the sanitation and recycling services that were supposed to happen on Monday have been shifted to Tuesday, while those scheduled for Tuesday will now occur on Wednesday. Glen Cove residents whose trash is typically collected on Mondays will now receive service on Tuesday, while those who usually have pickups on Tuesdays will be serviced on Wednesday. Notably, collections of yard waste and metal, typically done on Wednesdays, will not take place this week.
