The 2026 Vuelta a Andalucía is in the books, and Movistar Team celebrated a return to grand tour success with Iván Romeo taking overall victory. Romeo sealed the yellow jersey after a determined ride on the final stage in Lucena, ahead of a competitive pursuit from Tom Pidcock, who won that stage but could not overhaul the GC lead.
Romeo, a rider from Valladolid, first seized control in stage 2 and then spent the rest of the week protected by his teammates. Their support was evident on the tricky climbs of Alto de la Primera Cruz, where the team managed the race with confidence and cohesion.
In the finish, Pidcock’s late attack could not derail Romeo’s overall lead. Romeo crossed the line in the chase group just 12 seconds behind, sharing that moment with Andreas Leknessund, who stood as his closest GC rival, in sixth place overall. The result left Romeo celebratory and expressive in his post-race remarks.
“I had a very beautiful day, something I’ll remember for life: my first overall title. It was a major goal for this season, and sometimes it arrives when you least expect it,” Romeo said. His aggressive racing style and rising climbing form in the race’s second half were crucial to defending the yellow jersey.
He added, “Without a time trial maybe the plan looked different, but my form was excellent. And today the team wasn’t just good, they were 11 out of 10. I did nothing but suffer on the last climb to secure the overall.” Importantly, Romeo noted that defending the GC wasn’t his initial plan for this race.
“The plan was to stay with Andreas Leknessund, who was my closest GC rival. I knew that, given my current form, it would be tough for others to gain time. I had a 51-second advantage on Pidcock, and when he attacked with 5.5 km to go I couldn’t respond with the same force. Cresting the final climbs close to him was my aim, and that’s what I did.”
For the 22-year-old, this triumph marks the first GC win of his career and adds another impressive chapter to a growing palmarès as a young pro. Romeo reflected on the winter work that set up this surge, saying, “We trained hard this winter to make a real leap this season. The goal was to reach this level and compete with the best. So far, everything is progressing as planned, and we hope it keeps going.”
Beyond the victory, Romeo also delivered a pointed message to critics of Movistar’s celebrations. When asked about those who questioned their post-win celebrations, he shot back with a reminder of team unity: “In this team we’re all mates. If I hadn’t won today, Jefferson Cepeda might have been the one to do so, as he was up ahead. But he dedicated himself to closing every gap perfectly. That’s who we are—a tight unit—and if people don’t like how we celebrate, they’d better get used to it.”
